Usman Fires Back at “Scared” Fans Accusing Him of Ducking Rakhmonov

Is it possible to avoid the “scared” narrative?

Kamaru Usman is not letting accusations of dodging Shavkat Rakhmonov simmer. This Saturday night, “The Nightmare” will watch from the sidelines as Rakhmonov takes on Ian Machado Garry in what’s shaping up to be an exciting showdown. A change in plans led to that opportunity. When Belal Muhammad found himself sidelined by a foot infection, the path for Rakhmonov became clearer. The initial plan was for “Nomad” to challenge Muhammad for the UFC Welterweight Championship – but after the title holder’s sudden ailment, a new opponent stepped into the spotlight.

Usman, who is known for his strategic approaches and fierce fighting style, has been vocal about his preference for a more deliberate preparation for top-tier opponents like Rakhmonov. He admitted that he needed time to strategize and prepare. But now, instead of facing a fight against Rakhmonov, “The Nigerian Nightmare” finds himself at the center of online discussions revolving around potential ducking claims.

During an episode of the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast, Usman addressed those who cast doubt on his commitment to the sport. “I’m seeing online people go, ‘Oh, you scared? You ducked him?’ Like, what?” he exclaimed. “This is the same sentiment that I feel like people are doing to Jon Jones. When people were your fans or fans of a fighter don’t get their desired wish that they want, ‘That’s the fight I want,’ then it’s like, ‘Oh, no, that guy must be scared because he didn’t take the fight.’ Like guys, shut up.”

“We step in there each and every time. I have 22 or 25 fights, but everyone, ‘Oh, he’s scared?’ Yeah, okay, world champion and defending belts time and time again. ‘Oh, he’s scared,’ yeah, shut up. Just ’cause you didn’t get what you wanted. Guess what? It’s like your mom telling you, ‘No, you can’t have that toy today.’ So, shut your mouth.”

Usman hasn’t stepped into the Octagon since October 2023 and his last victory was in late 2021. His recent performances, though, haven’t been successful. The questions linger: How much more does “The Nigerian Nightmare” have left to offer? Will he return to the top of the UFC Welterweight division? Only time will tell.
